Full Recap

At the slaughterhouse, Ashley and Olivia stare in shock at seeing Claire heal a fatal wound and Rebecca turn invisible. Thinking quickly, Claire claims that the sorority sisters who set up the scavenger hunt drugged their water with hallucinogenics, and the girls imagined what they saw. Claire suggests that they keep it to themselves. Once the two girls go, Gretchen worries that a sorority member just tried to kill them.

In New York City, Peter and Hesam are among the EMTs helping at a train wreck. As they transport a paralyzed man, Patrick, back to the hospital. Peter makes sure that Hesam isn’t watching and then uses Jeremy Greer’s borrowed ability to heal Patrick’s paralysis. As they take Patrick inside, Hesam observes that Peter is looking tired. Peter dismisses his concerns and Hesam notes that Patrick is the fourth victim that wasn’t as badly injured as they first thought. As they go inside, Emma watches the chaos in the ER as everyone mobilizes to deal with the emergency.

In Los Angeles, Sylar is still occupying Matt’s body and prepares to take a first-class flight to New York. Matt is with him as a mental image and wonders what Sylar plans to do. Sylar tells him that the last thing he remembers is Pete stabbing him with a syringe, so he plans to start with Peter. He tries to get Matt to tell him what happened but Matt refuses. They go through the security checkpoint and the alarms go off as the security people spot a gun in Sylar’s luggage. As the personnel arrest Sylar, he wonders what happened and Matt explains that he used his mental influence to make Sylar think he was packing away a pair of socks, not a gun. When Sylar tries to use Matt’s telepathy to convince the security staff to let him go, Matt blocks it and warns that Sylar may control his body but will never control his power.

At the carnival, Sylar is sleeping and having dreams and flashes of Nathan’s life. He wakes up and unconsciously shapeshifts into Nathan. He walks out into the carnival and tries to figure out where he is, and overhears Samuel and Lydia talking. “Nathan” flies away as Samuel and Lydia come out of the trailer. Samuel says that a situation comes up with Claire Bennet and he has to go deal with it.

Claire and Gretchen go back to their dorm room and Gretchen tries to check Rebecca’s background. Claire says she’s going to Rebecca’s room and search it for answers. Gretchen is worried that Rebecca might be in the room there and Claire sprays talcum powder around to make sure she isn’t present but invisible. Gretchen worries and suggests she go with Claire, but Claire says she should stay put.

At the hospital, Emma notices a nurse drop some equipment. A doctor calls Emma over and has her apply pressure to a wound, and tells her to let a nurse know the patient is prepped. Once he’s gone, Emma picks up a discarded suture packs and stitches up the wound on her own. Peter notices what she’s doing but notices another dying patient. He uses his mimicked healing power again and collapses against the wall, exhausted.

Claire goes to the sorority and talks to Ashley and Olivia. She realizes that they have no memory of what happened during the scavenger hunt and realizes that the Haitian, Rene, is responsible. Noah comes down stairs with his partner and her father assures her that he’s there for her.

Sylar is put on a no-fly list and released after several hours. He drives cross-country but pulls over with a flat tire. Matt boasts that he mentally influenced Sylar to overlook a piece of metal in the road. Sylar tries to fix the flat without a success. A driver, Hank, pulls over and offers to help. As he works on the tire, Matt causes Sylar to stumble. Sylar picks up a tire iron and Matt wonders if he’s going to take a swing at him. Sylar just smiles and then beats Hank to death with it, and then points out that Matt is the one who killed the man.

Claire thanks Noah for her help but insists that he let her keep the “good stuff” in her life like Gretchen. He sends Rene back with her and Claire worries that the Haitian is going to wipe Gretchen’s memory. Noah explains that Rene will use his power to negate Rebecca’s invisibility if she launches another attack. Claire admits it’s a good plan and thanks him again.

As Sylar searches Hank’s body, he boasts that he can kill but Matt doesn’t have the spine to kill someone to stop Sylar. He warns Matt that if he doesn’t stop the mental sabotage, he’ll keep killing people. Matt reluctantly agrees and Sylar finishes replacing the flat.

Peter is trying to regain his breath when Emma finds him. She has him sit down and he explains that he’s exhausting himself trying to heal everyone who needs his help. When Emma suggests that he stop, Peter says that he doesn’t want to go back to being ordinary. He says that the staff could use her help and asks where she learned to suture. Emma says that she went to medical school but dropped out.

Claire comes back to her dorm room and finds Gretchen packing to leave. Gretchen says that she’s going home because she can’t deal with her life being threatened. Claire says that she and Noah can handle it but Gretchen says that while murder attempts are part of Claire’s life, she can’t handle it. Claire asks Rene to follow Gretchen to the airport and make sure that Rebecca doesn’t attack her. Once they leave, Samuel arrives and offers his help. He apologizes for the awkward introduction and says he’s looking for a Rebecca, a member of his family. He explains that Rebecca has told him about Claire’s ability and that he is also an evolved human. Samuel offers to provide Claire with some answers.

Noah breaks into Rebecca’s room and searches through her belongings. He finds one of the compasses and then hears something behind him. He draws a taser and threatens to stun Rebecca if she doesn’t, but he doesn’t want to hurt her. Rebecca turns visible and says she finds it hard to believe.

Sylar stops at the Burnt Toast Diner in Midland, TX, and orders the Tahitian pancakes. He talks with Lynette and, once she goes, tells Matt that he killed another waitress there. He tells Matt to explain what happened to his body or he’ll kill Lynette. When Matt balks, Sylar starts to approach Lynette and Matt hastily tells him that he explain what happened.

Samuel explains that he has terrakinesis and that he has gathered a family of others at the carnival. Rebecca joined the carnival when she was young, and that family isn’t about blood but about people who accept you without question. He admits that he doesn’t support Rebecca murdering Annie, but says that she has good reason because her father was murdered when she was five.

In her room, Rebecca tells Noah that they met when she was five. He came after her father, an evolved human, and shot him down. Her father hid her under the bed before he died.

Samuel explains that Noah hunted down Rebecca’s father, and others like him, without warrant or probable cause, and that life is more complicated than that.

Rebecca explains that she wished she could disappear when Noah came for her. She turned invisible and avoided him. Since then, she has spent her entire life wondering why she could wish to save herself but not her father.

Upon hearing Samuel’s story, Claire realizes that she’s just a pawn, and Rebecca is trying to get at Noah through her.

Rebecca tells Noah that she plans to take away his dreams for Claire. Noah warns her not to go after his daughter and prepares to shoot her. Two sorority girls come in and Rebecca turns invisible. Noah makes a hasty excuse and leaves.

Samuel congratulates Claire for sending Gretchen away, and Claire says that Gretchen left on her own. He explains that unevolved humans have no idea what their lives are like, and he avoided that problem by surrounding himself with others like himself. Samuel asks Claire what Noah would do now, and Noah comes in to echo his question. Samuel realizes that Claire has been stalling for time until her father returned. He admits that Rebecca is disturbed but that Noah has some responsibility for her mental problems. Noah asks about the compass and Samuel admits that in the wrong hands, it could lead people like Danko to the carnival. Danko was the one who killed Joseph, but there are other people out there who bear them harm… like Noah. Samuel claims he just wants to find Rebecca and get her help for her problems, but Noah takes him prisoner.

Megan, one of the patients from the children’s ward, collapses. Emma and Peter find her Emma insists she can help the girl. She manages to drain the fluid in the girl’s chest and saves her.

Noah takes Samuel out to his SUV and handcuffs him. Samuel focuses on Claire, saying that she shouldn’t blame Noah because he can’t understand people like them. Rebecca attacks Claire and Noah, and Samuel grabs the taser and stuns her. He picks up Rebecca and tries to get her away, and Noah draws his gun. Claire tries to stop him and her father knocks her to the ground. She begs him to stop and Noah hesitates long enough for Samuel to get Rebecca away. Noah apologizes to Claire, who isn’t convinced.

As Sylar casually doodles on a napkin, Matt explains to Sylar what he did and admits he didn’t realize what would happen, or that Sylar’s thoughts and memories would be trapped in his mind. Sylar asks for the check and asks who was responsible. Matt explains that Angela and Noah came up with the plan, and Noah says he’s going to find “Nathan,” get his body back, and then kill everyone even remotely involved in the plan.

Outside, the police arrive and Matt explains that he influenced Sylar to unwittingly write on the napkin that he had a gun. He admits that he’s going to prove that he’s willing to kill someone to stop Sylar: Matt himself. As the police surround Sylar, Matt concentrates and forces Sylar to reach into his jacket. The police believe that Sylar is going for a gun and open fire. Sylar goes down with several gunshot wounds and Matt fades away.

Noah takes Claire back to her dorm room and apologizes for shoving her. She insists that she doesn’t bruise easily and he agrees. Noah assures her that he wants a normal life and an education for her, but Claire says that life isn’t that simple.

Once the crisis is over, Emma goes to the ward to play the piano after propping up a photo of a young boy. Peter comes in and asks who the boy is, and Emma explains that it’s her nephew Christopher. She was babysitting him and he drowned when she didn’t hear him call for help. When that happened, she dropped out of medical school. Peter takes puts Megan’s tiara and says that the girl wanted Emma to have it for saving her life. He points out that no matter what happened with Christopher, she saved Megan and made a difference. Emma thanks him for helping to save her and Peter asks if she’s going to go back to medical school. Emma doesn’t know and asks if he can still see sounds. Peter admits he can’t but offers to play with her, and then puts the tiara on Emma’s head.

The paramedics try to revive Matt en route to the hospital.

Claire tries to go to sleep without success.

Emma goes home and looks at her doctor’s coat.

Samuel gets Rebecca back to the carnival and apologizes for stunning her. She apologizes for getting sloppy but Samuel figures that they now have Claire where they want her even if things didn’t go as planned. Samuel promises Rebecca that she’ll get her revenge on Noah. Lydia interrupts to tell him that Sylar has disappeared.

Noah goes to his apartment and goes over news clippings, including one about a manor in New York City that fell into a sinkhole.

Peter goes to his apartment and takes down the clippings he’s been collecting of the people he’s saved. Nathan arrives at his doorstep and says that he’s in trouble.
